Country Guitar Lessons - Guitars and Guitarists

!±8± Country Guitar Lessons - Guitars and Guitarists

Country guitar lessons in these days of the world wide web are now popular all over the world. If you are wondering what the fuss is about I will just mention some aspects of country guitar playing that excite the interest of music fans and guitar enthusiasts alike. This article will focus on a couple of the more individualistic guitar styles in country music and also talk a little about the Telecaster - the country musician's guitar.

First let us look at a guitar style that has entered the country genre through blues and rock. The slide guitar, also known as the bottleneck guitar is a lyrical way of expressing feelings through guitar music. It was developed in the early twentieth century by the early blues players, and popularized by young white rock and blues players in the nineteen sixties. Now there are many country guitar players who see the musical possibilities in this style of playing. The key to this technique is sliding an object along the guitar strings to make a whining or wailing sound. This presents the guitar player with many opportunities to play notes that fall between the frets of the guitar as well as imitating the sound of a singing voice.

The term "bottleneck" refers to the practice of many slide guitar performers of producing the sliding sound by fitting the neck of a bottle to their first or second finger. Popular wisdom has it that other players used the blade of a knife. Modern slide guitar players usually go to a music shop and buy a slide. You can play slide guitar with the guitar held in the normal playing position or with the guitar in your lap. A player can use an ordinary steel string acoustic guitar tuned in the standard way or to an open chord, or a resonator guitar which has a distinctive metallic sound well suited to slide playing.

Another guitar style used by country guitar players is chicken pickin', developed to high art by Waylon Jennings. It is used in lead guitar solos and involves the guitar player pulling on the string with his right hand fingers and at the same time damping the string with his left hand. Most country guitar players use a plectrum or thumbpick to play bass notes in conjunction with chicken pickin' on the treble strings.

Chet Atkins is a country guitar player who was adept at the chicken pickin' technique but he was most well known for his adaptation of the Travis picking technique. Merle Travis developed an impressive solo playing technique using his thumb to pick bass notes and his index finger to play melody or filler notes. Chet Atkins was so impressed with Travis' solos that he assumed that Travis was using his second and ring fingers in addition to his index finger. This mistaken assumption led to a whole new generation of country guitar players inspired by the Chet Atkins style.

If you want to take country guitar lessons you should learn about the typical sound that is associated with country guitar music. While rock and roll has as many sounds as there are guitar players, country guitar has its own sound. This is due to most country players opting to stay with the clean, unadorned sound of the Fender Telecaster. The "Tele" had a sound that made aspiring guitar players sit up and take notice combined with a design that made it a dream to play. It is a solid body electric guitar with two pickups, and was the first electric guitar to be successfully produced and sold on a large scale.

In the early days of the electric guitar both rock and country guitar players wanted to be heard by the audience without feedback interfering with the sound of the guitar. The Telecaster filled the bill when it came out in 1950 and has remained a popular choice for solo guitarist ever since. Country guitarists noted for being enthusiastic Telecaster players include Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, James Burton and Merle Haggard.

How To Save Gas In Your Jeep

!±8± How To Save Gas In Your Jeep

Jeeps are known more for their utility than for their fuel economy. The fact that we lift them and add large tires often adds to their thirst for fuel. However, there are a few simple things that you can do to save gas in your Jeep.

The single largest factor in how much gas your Jeep uses is how it is driven. Making smooth starts and driving at a steady speed will do more to save gas in your Jeep than any thing else you can do.

Large off road tires can add rolling resistance to your Jeep causing it to use more gas. Lower air pressure that makes them get more traction off road also causes them to be more resistant to rolling on pavement. Bringing tires back to full pressure when driving on the road will help save gas. Also, having a set of street tires can help save gas and reduce wear on your off road tires.

Having the right gear ratio will also keep your engine in the proper operating range for better fuel economy. As you go up in tire diameter, you also need to go up in gears to match. This will keep your engine operating in the proper RPM range for optimum efficiency.

Another simple way to save gas is to reduce the amount of stuff you carry around. Stronger bumpers, skid plates and winches all add weight and require more fuel to carry around. Any extra gear that can be removed and stowed between trips can help save gas. So, look at leaving the High Lift and other heavy items at home.

Low restriction air filter systems and a low restriction exhaust can also help save gas. Replacing the stock manifold with a header can add a small amount of engine efficiency. The stock system is very efficient and only small improvements can be expected. However, if the exhaust system is damaged, it may be adding fuel wasting restrictions. Dirty air filters and damaged air intake plenums can also reduce economy.

External accessories such as roof racks and wider fender flares will add aerodynamic drag to your Jeep. Keeping the exterior sleek will help save gas. So, put the spare tie inside or on the back and remove the safari rack when you are not using it.

A well lubricated vehicle will also have less drag and use less gas. Save gas by adding friction reducing oil additives to the engine at every oil change. Using a lighter weight oil can also help save gas. Check the owner's manual for the proper weight of oil for your Jeep's engine. I have had good results for adding Market America's Friction Free 3000 to each oil change.

Keeping the engine's ignition system in top shape will also help save gas. Fresh spark plugs and wires will ensure that every ignition cycle results in a complete burn. I use the Champion RC9YC plug gapped a bit wider than stock to increase gas mileage on my Jeeps. A high energy ignition system like a MSD or Jacobs will be helpful on older Jeeps but less improvement will be seen on modern engines that already have high energy systems stock. When changing the plug wires, it is a good idea to change the distributor cap and rotor to complete the renewing of the electrical system.

There are a few sensors that can reduce fuel economy in the engine if they malfunction. The most important is the oxygen sensor. If this sensor is damaged or contaminated, the computer may not inject the proper mixture of fuel. Replacing the oxygen sensor at the specified intervals may help you save gas. I have also found that the engine temperature sensor needs to provide correct information to he computer for optimum fuel economy. If you have a Cherokee and the electric fan is not coming on as expected, this sensor may be at fault. Replacing it will also help you save gas.

Several fuel additives have been promoted as ways to save gas. I have tried adding acetone and other chemicals but I have not seen any improvement in economy. However, occasionally adding SeaFoam to the fuel seems to help keep the injectors clean and helps with engine drivability with in turn helps save gas. I have also seen some benefit to using Market America's fuel enhancer. The MA fuel enhancer also helps keep the fuel level sending unit clean so that it correctly indicates the level in the tank. This sensor tends to pick up sulfates form the fuel causing it to not read correctly. The MA fuel enhancer seems to reduce this build up.

One last note on fuel; fuel with ethanol will increase fuel consumption. I have seen as much as 10% gas saving by using gasoline without ethanol added. In addition, I have found that fuel with ethanol tends to cause the idle air control valve to stick. If possible, avoid fuel that has had ethanol added.

Enjoy your Jeep and hopefully these tips will help you use a little less gas. Then you will have a little extra cash to spend on more Jeep modifications!

Fender Guitars - The Dream

!±8± Fender Guitars - The Dream

During the 60s, while rock and roll was growing, many manufacturers of various backgrounds tried to break into the mirrored growing world of guitars. Their youthful attitude, high demand and simplicity in design made guitar manufacturing seem like a cakewalk. Not many of them, however, achieved the success that Fender did.

Whether it's the unique, crisp and electrifying sound they make or how smooth and luscious they feel in your grasp, there's no denying the legend that Fender Guitars are made of. Reliable strength, bright tone and attractive bodies are not all Fender has to offer, of course. Fender has a deep history in the music industry and will likely continue on for many long years. From hard rock to metal, jazz, thrash, punk and Reggae, Fender's got you covered.

Leonidas Fender

In 1938, a man named Leonidas Fender, spent most of his time as an electronics technician repairing radio equipment and PAs. His passion for instruments began at a young age so it has been no wonder to the public that Leo, as his friends call him, owned his own business so young and ventured into guitar manufacturing in the 1940s. This was after a brief stint with business partner Clayton Orr Kauffman, which produced the Hawaiian Steel Lap Guitar. This particular guitar was the first mass produced solid-body electric and gave Leo a taste of what his future could look like.

On his own and finally using the Fender name, Leo created a line of amps, the first of which was released in 1948 and called the Tweed Amp because of its hideous tweed fabric covering, though it's official name was The Champ. The effective piece of equipment was an instant hit for home-based players in need of standard equipment for learning and jamming. This, I believe, was a direct boost to the rock-and-roll-at-home era which has never ended.

The Fender Standard

There is little argument that Leonidas Fender had a direct affect on America's participation in the Rock and Roll movement of the sixties. Fender has made some of the most well known, best selling guitars on the market and knowing what's what in the world of Fender can make all the difference in play quality.

The American Standard Stratocaster

This baby is an American Classic even today! Hand rolled fingerboard edges, Alnico V pickups and staggered tuners are the basics but the more modern Strats also have the new bent-steel saddles in the bridge, a copper-style block for better resonance and the best finish yet to date!

The American Deluxe Stratocaster

This guitar is made of dreams with 22 Medium Jumbo Frets, a Fender DH1 Humbucking pickup, Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Strat pickup for the mid section and another Samarium Noiseless for the neck. This gorgeous guitar is also equipped with standard controls, a master volume with switch and two tone controls and pickup switching. And don't forget the Whammy Bar.

Special Edition Fenders

Besides the two Strats, Special Edition Fenders are also a great pick. From the Aerodyne Classic Strat equipped with a more modern body shape to the Jaguar HH which features Dragster Humbucker pickups and signature Jaguar controls, you're sure to find spectacular features that will wow you in the Special Edition Section.

Who Loves Their Fender to The End

Throughout the many years that Fender has been producing excellent guitars, amps and accessories, they have collected themselves a long list of supporters, fans and clients. Going all the way back to Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton and all the way forward to Sheryl Crow, Billy Joel Armstrong of GreenDay and Avril Lavigne, everyone loves their Fender.

The Ultimate Tone - A Book Review of the Best DIY Guitar Tube Amplifier Series

!±8± The Ultimate Tone - A Book Review of the Best DIY Guitar Tube Amplifier Series

This article is a book review on a series of six books that is the most comprehensive and lucid explanation of guitar tube amp architecture, circuits, tone, components and construction technique for DIYers I have ever found. The review deals with each book separately and recommends purchasing them in a specific order to grow your knowledge in step with your building experience.

Kevin O'Connor of London Power has created a series of books under the main title of "The Ultimate Tone." These books are truly unique and carefully tailored for the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) guitar tube amp hobbyist and boutique amplifier builder. The books have a home-made 'feel' as well... all the illustrations are done by hand and the books are photocopy-printed on 8.5″x11″ paper and bound with plastic spines and clear plastic covers. There are six books in the series now with the most recent being released in the late spring of 2008. You may want to buy the entire series all at once and get a modest savings, but I think you should consider buying them one at a time and digest as you go, building projects along the way. A key point though... you don't necessarily want to buy them in numerical order. I recommend the following sequence:

The Ultimate Tone Volume 3 - Generations of Tone The Ultimate Tone Volume 5 - Tone Capture The Ultimate Tone Volume 2 - Systems Approach to Stage Sound Nirvana The Ultimate Tone Volume 4 - Advanced Techniques for Modern Guitar Amp Design The Ultimate Tone - Modifying and Custom Building Tube Guitar Amps The Ultimate Tone Volume 6 - Timeless Tone Built for the Future Today
The Ultimate Tone Volume 3 - Generations of Tone

This is the most important book in the series for the beginning tube amp builder.

Chapters 2 through 4 lay down the foundation of good DIY tube amp construction, filling you in on good electrical connections, grounding technique, lead dress and other wiring techniques, and mechanical layout including assembly methods like terminal strips, turret and eyelet boards.

The subsequent chapters each pick a particular 'iconic' amplifier, each iconic amplifier being a prototypical example of amplifiers of its class, and they are examined in detail as to the circuit topology, peculiar tonal characteristics that result and fatal flaws that the product is notorious for. Kevin provides the original schematics and then shows how you can apply the techniques detailed in the earlier chapters to improve the performance and reliability of the icon without harming the tone. The schematics are redrawn, layouts are provided and mechanical solutions are worked out to make each chapter a complete, self-contained, build-it-yourself amp project.

This process is repeated for several variations of the Champ in chapter 5 (this chapter greatly influenced my own single-ended amp project), then in quick succession: the Bassman, Plexi, 800, Bull Dog, AC-30, Portaflex, SVT, Bass Master, Custom Special, Guitar Mate, Herzog and Laney amplifiers are dealt with.

If you can only buy one book for your DIY guitar amp hobby I'd heartily recommend this one.

The Ultimate Tone Volume 5 - Tone Capture

Volume 5 picks up where Volume 3 left off, with a project-oriented approach and some sophisticated DIY tube amp solutions for guitar and bass.

The book starts off with a chapter overviewing vacuum tube operation called 'tube tone,' followed up by a chapter on guitar electronics and pickup characteristics.

The next two chapters are small projects: Sigma for effects switching and Triple-X for amplifier switching.

Chapters 5 & 6 are on transformers... important components but it made me yawn, sorry.

Starting with chapter 7, all the stops are pulled out and you are in project heaven... Major (200W), Soma 84 (EL84 amp), Standard (the London Power Standard Preamp from 1995 coupled to a 50W amp using four power tubes), Doppelsonde (mixing power tube types), AX84 (discussion on the original goal of a very low output power amp), Kelly (50W from 4 6V6s), and several other projects of lesser scope.

One favorite project I did was based on Kevin's reworking of the HotBox tube preamp pedal from Matchless in chapter 16. I built this pedal in a truly "true point-to-point style" (meaning terminal strips) in a tube pedal enclosure from Doug Hoffman, substituting a Baxandall tone stack and reworking the preamp values to be more Dumble-esqe (non-HRM type).

What would you do to match an amplifier to Yngwie Malmsteen's style? See chapter 18, 'Swede.'

The Ultimate Tone Volume 2 - Systems Approach to Stage Sound Nirvana

Volume 2 is not project oriented. The bulk of the book, chapters 2 through 5, deals with power supply tricks and a comprehensive overview of power amplifiers, including tube, solid-state and hybrid power amps. Chapter 3, on tube power amplifiers, has some very practical information on mods and fixes to Marshall and Fender bias circuits.

I like the 1st and last chapters of Volume 2 the best. The first chapter is a short discussion of sound stages and how you might setup your gear on stage for the best audience/band experience. The last, chapter 6, is called "Pillars of Tone" and in this chapter the major contributors tone at the block-level of a guitar tube amplifier system design are discussed one by one and Kevin provides some very valuable insight into tone shaping throughout the preamp/amplifier.

The Ultimate Tone Volume 4 - Advanced Techniques for Modern Guitar Amp Design

This is the book you'll want to buy if you feel the need to get deeply involved with the power scaling technology that Kevin has developed. Power Scaling, coined and trademarked by Kevin, is the way you can get aspects of power amp distortion (as opposed to preamp distortion) into your tone at bedroom volume levels. Volume 4 is not DIY project oriented but explores the issues, including attenuation, power scaling (both down and up), sag, and power management, tackled by modern guitar tube amp designers.

That said, the second-to-last chapter in Volume 4 might be important for a broader group of enthusiast builders... design philosophy. In this chapter Kevin provides a hierarchical design process that could be used to make key decisions on how you approach your next project.

The Ultimate Tone - Modifying and Custom Building Tube Guitar Amps

There is no volume number in the title of this book, it was the 1st. Personally, I bought it for completeness. I specifically wanted to have the 'perfect effects loop' information, although the loop itself is incorporated into a project in Volume 5. TUT also has some excellent material on reverbs and signal switching methods that is not explained in the other volumes. The first half of TUT introduces/overviews tube amp systems, power supplies & grounds then focuses on preamp and power amp modifications to commercial amplifiers (e.g. Marshall / Fender)... if you are totally new to tube electronics you may want to buy this 1st volume at the same time as Volume 3.

The Ultimate Tone Volume 6 - Timeless Tone Built for the Future Today

In many ways, Volume 6 is a continuation and extension of the material in Volume 4, where Power Scaling is introduced.  In Volume 6 a new 'direct control' version of Powerscaling is featured which was introduced in Vol 4 but flushed out with comprehensive circuits and applied to 'sag' and sustain control as well in Vol 6.  The new scaling circuits have many advantages for a DIY builder like greater noise immunity and less sensitivity to layout, etc.

I applied the new DC Power Scaling to a Trainwreck clone project and was really impressed with the improvement in 'playability' at lower volumes... the unmodified Trainwreck Express circuit is just too loud for domestic use, needing to be cranked to get the sweet tones it is renowned for.

One of the chapters in Volume 6 is dedicated to the Dumble amplifiers... something I was really looking forward to since many of my hobby projects focus on those circuits.  I found this short chapter to be a good introduction to the overall architecture of the Dumble amps, written from the point of view of the evolution from the early modified standard amps that Alexander Dumble started out doing, but I felt the chapter fell short in discussing some of the more important subtleties of the later Dumble models.

Volume 6 also has lots of other material in it, including a great tutorial on designing really high output power amplifiers and a great chapter on high gain amplifier designs with real-world circuits referenced and detailed.

In Summary...

Kevin's books have a very empirical approach. He encourages you to set aside convention in some instances or not be afraid to try combinations of tubes or even pulling tubes and in all cases clearly explains why it is o.k. and points out any reasons why it wouldn't be o.k. All the examples in the books are very practical and he certainly has the DIYer in mind as he is writing.

Kevin's body of work is truly encyclopedic in nature, and considering that, one feature sorely lacking from his books is any kind of indexing... this is aggravated by the fact that Kevin constantly refers to previous writings rather than repeat himself in a new volume, and it is very difficult to put your finger on the reference even with the other book in hand. Perhaps search engine technology, like Google's ability to search protected content, could be put to good use in this case and provide a kind of 'auto-index' on the web of all of Kevin's books without actually giving away the book itself. Or better yet, how about an e-book format of Kevin's entire collection of TUT books... I think all of the e-book readers include searching capabilities... and Kevin's hand-drawn schematics would probably scale adequately and be very readable on the e-paper displays these devices feature.

Meanwhile, how do you get Kevin's books today? The best way to get the books is to directly order them from London Power Press. They now have a shopping cart on http://www.londonpower.com.

You Don't Always Get What You Want

!±8± You Don't Always Get What You Want

You don't always get what you want, but do you get what you need? While pre-fishing for a tournament at Bull Shoals Lake in Missouri, we had some of the strangest things happen to us in three days there, than at any other lake we had ever been to then or since.

Now don't get me wrong, we love Missouri, but this tournament and the things that happened were a nightmare. We started our drive from Delaware in 1998, (we decided to go in March to pre-fish), and we stopped at a gas station in Ohio, and not having that much experience with our trailer and new truck yet, and the excitement of the Big Bass World Championship coming up soon, momentarily clouded my perception, and we clipped the side of the pumps and took out the wheel and the whole fender had to be taken off. We arrived at some cabins near Bull Shoals, and low and behold the water was down, I mean REALLY DOWN! We checked in and launched the boat. The mud was so soft that we got stuck while it started to snow. It was freezing all the time, but we have the better. The next morning, at 36 degrees, and a good wind, we left the shelter at 8 clock. The engine ran for about 45 seconds to complete! We once again achieved several times over the next 2 hours, but in the end 100 spouts and squirts later, stop it altogether.

We decided then and there that would let the first fish! We have the new Minnkota trolling motor, we're only a week before, and slowly maneuvered toclosest point. We started catching some real nice hybrids, and some largemouth, and really starting to develop a pattern for that area, and the trolling motor short circuited, and smoke came out! It was completely broken.

We paddled the bass boat back to the marina where we were staying and told him what happened. The local tournament was out, and so was going more than 100 yards now, but he said, I'll give you my trolling motor so you can still go." We thanked him, and went to the dock where he said it was. It was a transom mount motor with about 28 pounds of thrust! Not exactly standard fare on Table Rock or Bull Shoals in March, with a Nitro. But we were determined. We went out to the point where we were the day before, started catching some more fish, and the trolling motor he lent us broke. Not only did it break, but it actually broke at the shaft, it was a mess! We paid for the trolling motor, checked out of the cabin, (as it started to snow again), and started the 15 hour drive back home. We had fished for about 4 hours, in 7 days! We stopped at a motel on the way back, and my brother said, "I'll bet there's somebody in there that can fix a motor" "look at all the boats in the lot." We pulled in and in the lot after we registered, two older gentlemen were standing out by their rooms talking and my brother say "Do you guys know anything about boat motors?'. The guy says " DO I!", I've fixed motors my whole life" Hey Joe, he says to his friend, "I'll bet I can fix this guys motor faster than you!", his friend and he came over, took off the motor cover, and had it running in less than 10 minutes. We were dumbfounded and overjoyed at the same time. We couldn't thank them enough, and you could tell they were enjoying doing it. I was so excited, I jumped off the bow to the concrete, and broke my ankle.

Many hours later, after the hospital, we went out again, determined to fish somewhere and catch something at this point. We put in the boat, and started flipping the docks with a jig. I hooked into what felt like the World Record Bass on the second flip. It pulled so hard, I was shaking, a few minutes later I landed my 20 pound carp!

After a few choice words, I started to laugh and so did my brother Kurt. We composed ourselves and started casting around the docks again. A few minutes later, he set the hook on a monster. A beautiful 25 pound Carp! We loaded the boat, and headed back home. Sometimes it's just time to quit. We went to these lakes again, and had many great experiences in the Midwest. My brother even won a tournament or two, and he was the Big Bass World Champ/De, in 1999 and 2001, but that one week in March of 1998, was one of those ones that you never forget.

Despite the fact that ZZ Top has sold in the range of 60 million records, was one of the most memorable moments Gibbons recalls a performance soon, when he was relatively unknown.

"Maybeone of the first performances where the curtain opened, and we were greeted by a customer pays for the evening. We looked at each other, and then launched into the show. Played the first set, took a break, the man went and bought a Coke and went back and finished the night. We are still friends with the guy! "
